West began life under Paul Marshall with a comfortable win over Glossop North End.
The Hillmen had won all four previous visits to Brookburn Road stretching back over a decade but a repeat performance never looked likely against a West side fielding eleven debutants.
Neither side settled during a stop-start first half and though West had the better of possession, real goal threat failed to materialise until the last action, Billy Matthews turning his man in typical fashion and rolling the ball across goal for Cameron Darkwah, but the wideman couldn't control his effort at full stretch, lifting the ball over the bar from almost beneath it.
Darkwah was involved in West's breakthrough after the restart and we didn't need to wait long for it to arrive. West's #7 neatly brought down a high ball inside the Glossop box to tee up Jordan LAZENBURY to slot in from ten yards.
The Hillmen called Martin into action for a couple of straightforward saves but West's lead was always comfortable.
It was that man LAZENBURY again who doubled West's lead just after the hour, firing home from the penalty spot after substitute Victor Abadaki had burst through the Glossop back line only to be tripped by goalkeeper Povey, who was booked.
The second goal effectively ended the game as a contest and West cantered through the remainder in low gear. The closing stages saw Glossop manager Richard Brodie sub himself into the game, albeit already on a yellow card after an earlier disagreement with the referee Mr Cliffe.
ABADAKI put the gloss on the scoreline with a close range header after Lazenbury's corner had been knocked down, sealing West's fifth opening day win in the last six seasons.
