It was a night to forget for West as three Burscough goals in five minutes at the end of the first half put the match beyond reach.
Paul Marshall made four changes to the team that defeated Stockport Town ten days prior, though three of those were enforced as Jimmy Moore, Tom Murray and Harvey Roberts all served one-match bans. Victor Abadaki moved to the bench, while Max Sutton and Billy Matthews came in, Dan Hewitt made his full debut and Jordan Lazenbury returned after a five game absence.
West started the game on the back foot, Burscough twice hitting the woodwork in the opening minutes. The game settled and West took possession in the final third but didn't force veteran keeper Ben Barnes into any serious action.
The Linnets eventually went ahead in the 41st minute through Stephen Rigby and Sam Turner quickly doubled the lead, before adding his second and Burscough's third in stoppage time.
Paul Marshall made a double sub at half-time, introducing Victor Abadaki and Lewis Billingsley, as West looked for a way back into the contest. It was Abadaki who pulled a goal back just after the hour but that was the only West celebration of the night as Burscough completed a first-ever double over West.
Thank you to the West supporters who made the journey and we now begin preparing for Saturday’s rearranged FA Vase tie against Silden at Brookburn Road.
