RECREATION GROUND | BROOKBURN ROAD | CHORLTON | M21 8FE
Tuesday 3rd September 2024
NWCFL Premier Division
Matchday 6
West Didsbury & Chorlton 0
Irlam 1
Daniels (p)67
Attendance: 460
West line-up:
1 Martin, 2 Jones, 3 Sutton, 4 Moore (c) (14 Murray 17), 5 Cole, 6 Rowney, 7 Lescott (15 Matthews 56), 8 Whiteoak, 9 Wharton (12 Darkwah 66), 10 Lazenbury (16 Abadaki 30), 11 Billingsley. Not used: 17 McGonigle.
West slipped to a second home defeat of the season as familiar foes Irlam again left Chorlton with the points.
Paul Marshall made two changes to the side that started against Silsden at the weekend, with Ben Wharton and Lewis Billingsley - who were on the pitch at the end of the Cup win - coming in for Victor Abadaki and Billy Matthews.
Irlam haven't lost at Brookburn Road for over a decade and their cause was helped significantly as West captain Jimmy Moore and then talisman Jordan Lazenbury were forced off with injuries before the game had much chance to get going.
The first hour was a stalemate, broken when Chris Rowney brought down the impressive Takura Sambizi inside the West box. Ollie Martin went the right way but Declan Daniels' penalty was virtually unsaveable, hit with power in off the post.
West huffed and puffed and Irlam had goalkeeper Jack Buckley to thank for preserving their lead, while offering threat on the counter on occasion. Max Sutton and Tom Murray worked tirelessly down the left to create crossing opportunities but it was one of those nights where nothing fell right.
West's evening was summed up in stoppage time as Abadaki, not long since booked for attempting an overhead kick, harshly picked up a second yellow card for challenging Buckley as he gathered.
In stark contrast to recent FA Cup heroics, West's winless league run now stretches to five games with the gap to the playoffs already in double figures.
