West 0-1 Macclesfield

Saturday 3rd September 2022, FA Cup First Qualifying Round

West 0
Macclesfield 1 (Kengni 32)
Att: 1340

West were edged out of the FA Cup by Macclesfield at Brookburn Road.

In a clash between two of last season’s NWCFL divisional champions, Neil Kengni’s half-volley just after the half-hour proved the difference.

The home side had chances to open the scoring before Kengni’s goal, with the tireless Ben Elliott having two shots clawed away by visiting keeper Marcelo Pitaluga.

But Macclesfield struck when James Berry’s knock-down fell perfectly for Kengni to strike the ball low past Andrew Jones.

The visitors had a goal disallowed after the break, but most of the action took place at the other end – Dontai Gabidon curled a shot inches wide of the far post, and Curtis Miller had a shot blocked in stoppage time as West looked to force a replay.

Despite their best efforts, though, West were unable to blow Macclesfield’s house down – but exit the competition with their heads held high following a record-breaking run.
