West prevailed on penalties against Bacup Borough to progress in the Lancashire Challenge Trophy.

Tom Westall gave West a dream start, scoring his first goal for the club after just 35 seconds.

But the visitors hit back in the second half, with Michael Gervis converting a cross with 19 minutes remaining.

Gervis then saw red in the closing stages after he blocked a goal-bound shot with his hand, but keeper Henry Turner tipped Sam Heathcote’s spot-kick around the post to force a shoot-out.

Heathcote was successful second time around, along with Liam Delaney, Oliver Ford and Matty Cook, and after Andrew Jones blocked Bacup’s fifth attempt, Callum Jones converted to send West through to the second round.
