Junior Round-Up | 19th – 26th June

WD&C U10 Hawks v Timperley Rapid (19/06)

Next year, u10s will play a different format so we arranged a friendly to help us start to get to grips. It will be 9 a side, not 7, a bigger pitch, a bigger ball, offsides and no retreating at goal kicks. Quite a lot to get to grips with. And we had 3 debutants to add to the mix.

The game was an even affair on a sultry morning but we learnt that playing out from goal kicks is something to work on. New boy Jasper impressed on the ball and another debutant, Dylan, showed some good touches. Mars Bar Player of the Match Luca B worked tirelessly. Reuben brought birthday cup cakes and almost grabbed a birthday goal.

WD&C U10 Hawks v Urmston Meadowside Jaguars (26/06)

Jaguars rallied but Hawks pulled ahead as full time approached to win comfortably with Lucien netting his 50th career goal in two seasons.

WD&C U13 v Hough End Lions U13s Home 4-3 (20/06)

Starting line up: Alfie, Cameron, Louis, Jacob, Billy, Isaac, Tom, Zac, Frankie, William, George Subs: Ted, Mark

All good things have to come to an end. But it’s always great when the end in style – and when you know the “ending” has left it open for another instalment.

The 2020/21 footy season – a bizarre rollercoaster of a ride – may be over for West U13s. But they finished in style with a 4-3 win in a pulsating local derby against Hough End.

Goals from Tom, Isaac and Ted are lodged on the record as securing the win – but it was a hugely committed display by the whole team, coupled with some excellent football that had the coach and supporters applauding the lads off at the end.

Goals from Isaac and Tom put West two up and in control midway through the first half. The midfield and defence were immense in stopping a good Hough End team getting into any kind of rhythm.

Hough End pulled one back against the run of play but there was no sign of West’s head going down.

They picked up where they left off at the start of the second half with Isaac playing a lovely through ball to Ted and he calmly slotted home.

It was the wave after wave of attack with some lovely interplay creating a host of chances that Hough End’s keeper proved equal to.

Tom increased the lead with a now customary long range curler and there were more chances to increase the lead with George and Ted going close.

Hough End we’re growing frustrated as West’s midfield and defence continued to stifle their skilful players. The “friendly” became feisty at times but West were battling for every ball.

Two long ranges efforts pulled Hough End right back into the game, but the final whistle sounded with West deserved winners.

A fantastic display by everyone. Roll on next season.

Goals: Tom (2), Isaac, Ted

WD&C U17 v St John’s 4-0 (20/06)

In their penultimate game of the season the u17s overcame their ancient rivals in St Johns with a hard fought 4-0 victory with 2 goals from Daniel and 2 from MOTM Nicquille. Final game of the season is another local derby against Hough End.

Hawks signed off their season with a solid performance in a 9v9 friendly to get ready for next year’s new format.

As West’s 1st team men’s squad sweated through pre season training on an adjacent pitch, Hawks new signing Jasper scored his first goals for the club. Hawks were in total control by half time despite their own coach appealing for offside against them.

WD&C u17 v Hough End 8-1 (27/06)

The under 17s finished the season off in style with a friendly 8-1 win over local rivals Hough End. We went in to a very early 4-0 lead which rather knocked the stuffing out of the opposition and with the game 6-0 at half time both teams lost a bit of intensity and shape in the second half as centre halves went up front looking for first goals of the season and keepers were coming up for corners trying to snatch the headlines. All in all though a very satisfying end to the season all finished off with pizzas and beers at Jacksons Boat. final score WD&C U17 8 Hough End 1
