West welcomed supporters back to the Step Places Stadium with victory over NWCFL First Division North side Atherton Laburnum Rovers.

Some five months and 22 days since fans were last allowed into Brookburn Road, this pre-season clash between two sides aiming for promotion from their respective divisions was something of a slow-burner. The visitors – featuring former West assistant manager Warren Jones among their backroom staff – had the most presentable chance of the opening period when a cross was prodded wide at the far post.

But Chris Rowley’s side found their groove as the first half wore on and after Sam Heathcote had a header clawed away by another ex-West man, Ollie Culkin, Rhain Davis was in the right place at the right time to snaffle the rebound.

The home side had the better of the chances in the second half but the clearest opportunity came and went when LR’s subtitute keeper tipped over an effort from point-blank range. Davis’ goal was enough to secure the win, however, as Rowley’s team continue to tune-up ahead of the FA Vase assignment against Bury AFC in a fortnight’s time.
