Community Bonfire Night 2019 – Food options and menus

For 2019’s bonfire, our traders have decided upon a South African theme – we asked them to discuss who they are, what they do, and what they’ll be serving.

Duncan, from Bounceback Food

I run Bounceback Food CIC, a community cookery school that supports communities across Greater Manchester, Cheshire & North Wales by teaching people how to cook and providing food for foodbanks. Our public cookery courses use the ‘buy one, give one’ model to ensure that everyone in the community can share the joy of cooking e.g. when you buy a ticket to our Chorlton cookery course (held in West’s clubhouse) a free place is allocated to someone referred to us by The Longford Centre or Barakah Food Aid. TIckets for our 2020 courses are now on sale via Eventbrite if you’re looking for a gift that gives twice this Christmas!

On the night we’ll be sticking to the South African theme by cooking up a couple of classic vegetarian and vegan alternatives that featured on a recent series of Masterchef – chakalaka and geelrys. Adult portions are £5, child portions £2.50. The recipes also feature in our forthcoming cookbook, Secret dishes from around the world, due for release on November 13th. This can be pre-ordered via Waterstones, via our online store or at the stall on the night! We are a non-profit community interest company so any proceeds made on the evening will help to scale up our fight against food poverty.

Gavin, from Gavin’s Biltong and South African Foods

I am Gavin who has a South African food products business based in Macclesfield. We make delicious homemade biltong products as well as a traditional farmers sausage called Boerewors. These we use as hot dogs and use the same ingredients mix and make burger patties for our market hot food stall. We trade as Gavin’s Homemade Biltong but our hot food is just called South African Foods.

Our hot food stall menu is Hot Dogs and Burgers but as stated above these are not just run of the mill “cheap” supermarket type foods. These are served on a fresh batten roll or bap with extras options being:  fried onions, lettuce, tomato and cheese. Pricing is £5 per meal and half price for kids if requested – it’ll be a half portion for £2.50. The sausage and burger patties are made using a mixture of Beef, Pork and Lamb, along with a few spices. No added rusk or fillers etc. just meats and spice.

Biltong products are packed in various flavours and bags vary from 50g to 250g priced from £2.50 to £10 per bag. It’s a great snack meal to accompany any activity.

There will also be confectionary and refreshment stalls around the ground. Bringing cash is recommended.
