The latest attempt at staging West v AFC Liverpool takes place at Brookburn Road on Tuesday night, with both sides aiming to respond after damaging weekend defeats.

West’s unbeaten run came to a crushing end in east Lancashire as Steve Settle’s side were hammered 6-1 by Padiham. The Reds, meanwhile, remain mired in the relegation zone after falling to a 2-0 defeat at home to Congleton Town – their fifth reverse in six games.

Thought West still remain nine points clear of 20th-placed Maine Road, Saturday’s heavy defeat to the Storks was a reminder that they are not yet out of trouble. The visitors are rapidly running out of games to extend their seven-year stay in the Premier Division and have an ominous run-in – eight of the current top nine lie in wait before the season’s conclusion. However, their 2-2 draw at Charnock Richard at the start of March was a sign that all may not be lost as joint-managers Stuart Keir and Ben Williams attempt an escape act.
