Nic Evangelinos Joins Ashton United

West Didsbury & Chorlton can confirm that winger Nic Evangelinos has joined Evo-Stik Premier Division club Ashton United.  Evangelinos, 23, is a former Robin’s player and will head straight into their matchday squad this weekend.

Manager Steve Settle said; “Nico has been a massive asset to us and whilst we don’t want to lose him, he’s earned his chance to test himself by playing two leagues higher. It’s a great opportunity for him and one we can’t stand in his way of.”

“Nico has been courted by a number of clubs ever since he joined and everyone at West hope he succeeds higher up the non-league pyramid.”

Supporters’ Club secretary Matthew Britton added; “Through his two spells with the club, Nic has been one of the most exciting players that we’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing pull on a West shirt. There is no fan who could begrudge him this move, which is much deserved. He’s a favourite among many supporters, myself included. Upon his last return to the club, we purchased a Greece flag in honour of his heritage, which has flown in the shed end for every game since. We’ll be keeping that in safe in case we ever have the pleasure of seeing Evangelinos back at Brookburn Road again. Regardless of whatever team he would be turning out for, he’d get a warm reception.”

Evangelinos leaves the club having scored 52 goals in 84 appearances and was the clubs leading goal-scorer since joining the NWCFL. ‘Nico’ made his debut for West in a NWCFL League Challenge Cup tie as a substitute in a 3-3 draw away to Ashton Town scoring a penalty in a 5-4 penalty shoot-out win.

His first goal came on the 4th November 2014 in a 1-3 home loss to Congleton Town; the first of seven he would score for West that season.

He also famously netted a hat-trick, in the first appearance of his second spell, in West’s historic 15-1 win against Dinnington Town setting a FA Vase record for biggest margin of victory. Nico eventuall helped West to a club record finish scoring 21 goals in 31 appearances.

Last season Nico netted 13 times in just 20 appearances upon returning to the club before he had his season prematurely ended by a dislocated shoulder. His final West goal was, fittingly, an 89th minute in the 4-3 win over Burscough on Tuesday night taking his total for the season to 10 goals.

Everyone at West would like to wish Nic Evangelinos the very best of luck in his future endeavours.
