Match Preview

Following Tuesday’s 1-0 win against Prestwich Heys, West will be looking for another strong performance against Ashton Town as they become our second guests of pre-season at Brookburn Road.

Ashton Town made headlines last season when they added former World Cup finalist Pascal Chimbonda to their ranks – leading to coverage worldwide. The former Spurs and Wigan made 4 appearances for the side during his one month contract in January 2019. His contract was then extended by one further game, by request of Premier League TV, who asked to film a feature about Pascal and his time at the club. West fans are likely to notice Anthony Potts lining up in defence – a club legend at Brookburn Road, “Pottsy” made over 250 appearances for West before leaving for more first-team football in the second half of the last campaign. All at the club look forward to welcoming our former captain back – if he is available for selection, of course.

Ashton Town finished 9th last campaign, playing in the North West Counties Division One North. The game should be a good test for Brad Cooke’s side – Town are an ambitious side, who are on the rise having returned to the NWCFL in 2018/19 following their relegation the previous year. Manager Dave Dempsey will be hoping to build on their mid-table finish last time out and push for the upper reaches over the next 10 months – the club have announced a number of signings on social media, including former Skelmersdale United player Tom Moly.

West last faced Ashton Town back in October 2014, when the two sides faced off in the League Challenge Cup. Goals from Chris McDonagh, Steve Settle, and Alex Baird were enough to take the game to penalties in a 3-3 away draw, with West winning the resultant shootout.  The last league meeting between the two was in April 2013, when Gareth Thomas, Michael Aston, and a Lee Malkin double earned West a 4-0 win en route to promotion.
