New Signings | Tenacious Trio
We're delighted to strengthen our defensive ranks with a trilogy of new signings.
Johnson Opawole, Scott Johnston and Claudio Oliveira have joined Lee Rick and Steve Yarwood's group for the 2026/27 season.
Johnson Opawole
The 20-year-old centre-back brings a strong and physical presence, as well as calmness and composure on the ball.
LR: "Johnson arrives with an outstanding football education, having progressed through academy football before earning a professional contract at Blackpool.
Injuries have unfortunately disrupted the last 12 months of his development, but his ability and potential are unquestionable. At this stage he needs regular game time and an environment for him to enjoy his football again, and we firmly believe West is the ideal opportunity for him.
Given the right platform, I have no doubt that Johnson has the talent to establish himself at a much higher level in the game."
Scott Johnston
The 23-year-old defender arrives in M21 from NPL Division 1 West side Newcastle Town.
LR: "From our first conversation early in pre-season, Scott showed a real desire to be part of what we're building at West.
Having played at Step 4 last season, he brings quality and experience to our defensive options. His attitude, work rate, and professionalism have been outstanding since arriving, and he has been a real positive influence throughout pre-season.
Scott has impressed everyone at the club, and we're looking forward to working with him throughout the season."
Claudio Oliveira
Last season's Reserves' Manager's Player of the Year steps up to the First Team ahead of the 2026/27 season.
LR: "Claudio is another fantastic example of the outstanding work being done by Jeff and his coaching team in developing young talent.
Having been part of the First Team squad throughout pre-season, Claudio has consistently impressed the coaching staff. Defensively, he is outstanding in 1v1 situations, while his pace, energy and attacking intent make him a real threat going forward from full-back.
Everyone at the club is delighted to welcome Claudio into the senior squad, and we look forward to seeing his continued development throughout the season."
