West exited the Lancashire Challenge Trophy on penalties after a late Prestwich Heys fightback.

The home side looked to be on course for the last eight after a James Cottee brace, but Bradley Sixsmith scored twice in the last ten minutes to force a shoot-out.

There were chances at both ends in an entertaining first half with Cottee having a goal ruled out for handball, but the West striker did open the scoring for real three minutes before the break when he got his head to a Kris Holt corner.

Seconds after the restart Cottee had a brace when Matty Argent-Barnes raced down the right wing and squared for the easiest of finishes.

West had numerous chances to add a third, most notably when Matty Boland saw his penalty saved by Heys keeper Thomas Simpson, with James Sigsworth and Josh Tinker also going close.

But missed chances were to haunt West as Sixsmith found the bottom corner from the edge of the box with seven minutes remaining, and then capitalised on a defensive mix-up in stoppage time to pull Heys level.

After the visitors’ comeback there was an air of inevitability about the shoot-out, and Heys scored all five of their efforts to progress with Argent-Barnes’ skyward effort proving crucial.
