Our visitors for this year’s festive fixture will come from further afield than usual, with the Greens making the 30-mile trip from central Lancashire to M21. Just two places separate the sides in the Premier Division’s mid-table – West in 8th, Charnock in 10th – but Chris Rowley’s side hold an eight-point advantage, so a win would be invaluable as they look to maintain their interest in the division’s upper echelons.

While West emerged from the cold snap to take on Ashton Athletic last week, Charnock were not so lucky – burst water pipes put paid to their Lancashire Challenge Trophy tie at home to Padiham, meaning their last action was a 2-0 win at Winsford United on 5th December.

Even casual observers of the NWCFL won’t have been surprised that Carl Grimshaw was among the scorers at the Barton Stadium – the Greens’ number 9 hit his 500th goal for the club in November, and has scored in all five meetings with West.

The Greens have never finished outside of the top six in any NWCFL season – following up an instant promotion in 2016/17 with two 6th places and two 4th places in the Premier Division, disregarding the extremely short-lived 2020/21 campaign.

This will be both sides’ final game of 2022, so both will be determined to sign off from the calendar year on a high note – and from a West perspective, three points would be the perfect conclusion to what has been a memorable 12 months on the pitch.
