West head into Bank Holiday double header, Congleton Town (A) & Runcorn Linnets (H)

One of the first true signs that summer is coming to a close, the August Bank Holiday weekend is also where the football season finally takes shape and properly kicks into gear. This is certainly the case for West, as Steve Settle will look to build upon the strong foundations of our opening two league games of the season by earning points against two increasingly ambitious North West Counties sides.

West start their August Bank Holiday double header with a trip to Congleton Town this Saturday (26th August), where both teams will be looking to gain momentum before the heavy slog of the Autumn schedule hits. Congleton have been tipped by many – including the experts on the Counties Podcast – to be dark horses for the league this year. In the same fixture last season, West fell to a 2-1 loss – however, Steve Settle’s boys avenged this during the Easter Groundhop with a 3-1 victory on home soil.

Congleton started the league season with a 6-2 home victory over AFC Darwen, before falling to a 2-1 loss at Maine Road. A win for either side in this fixture would set a huge marker for the coming months, and this is likely to be a tough test for both teams.

Congleton Town play at Ivy Gardens, Booth Street, off Crescent Road, Congleton, Cheshire, CW12 4DG (see the Google Map listing here) – roughly a 45 minute drive from Chorlton, or 2 hours by public transport. Tickets are £6/£3/U12s Free. If you are interested in travelling to the game – or, if you have spaces in your car to offer travelling supporters – please email join@wdcfcfan.club.

Two days later, we return to Chorlton to see out the long weekend: come celebrate Bank Holiday Monday (28th August) by cheering West on as we welcome Runcorn Linnets to Brookburn Road. Perennially at the upper reaches of the NWCFL table, Linnets will be looking to finally gain promotion this season – and this is sure to be a fiercely contested game.

Last season, West started the season by drawing away at Linnets in a thrilling 2-2, but the equivalent home performance will need a huge improvement: Runcorn Linnets ran out emphatic 4-1 winners. Our Bank Holiday visitors have started their season with a 4-0 victory away at Abbey Hey, before a 1-1 draw at home to Irlam.

Tickets will be their usual £5/£3/U12s in free.

Updates for both will be available on our social media platforms, Twitter and Instagram.
