West will look to return to winning ways in the league this weekend as we welcome league leaders Runcorn Town to Brookburn Road.

For local foodbank Barakah Food Aid, we will be collecting food donations at the game.

Last time out in the NWCFL, West fell to an unexpectedly thorough loss away at Irlam. Under the Friday night lights, an early goal saw the hosts take the lead, before West were twice punished on the break in the second half take leave the final score at 3-0. The team bounced back from this first league defeat of the seaosn in style, however, with a 6-1 win in the first qualifying round of the FA Vase last weekend away in AFC Blackpool. Goals from Evangelinos, Kay, Henderson and a hat-trick from Bailey were more than enough to secure West’s passage through to the next round.

West currently sit 8th in the table, but could move as high as 2nd with a win, depending on other results.

Runcorn Town are likely to be a much sterner test of Steve Settle’s team’s mettle. Currently top of the league by an incredible 8 points after only 7 games, Town are yet to drop a point in the league. With league top scorer Craig Cairns in their ranks – 9 goals in NWCFL games already, in addition to 3 in the cups – they’re explosive going forward whilst also relatively secure at the back, having only conceded 8 so far.

Among Town’s victim in the league this season have been Maine Road (4-3 at home), AFC Liverpool (2-1 away), Barnoldswick (1-0 away), Northwich Victoria (6-1 at home), Squires Gate (2-1 away), Bootle (2-0 at home), and Burscough (3-2 at home). They also reached the Preliminary Round of the FA Cup, before losing 2-1 away at Frickley Athletic.

Runcorn Town will finish Saturday night atop the table regardless of the result, but will certainly be looking to build up an even bigger lead on the rivals Runcorn Linnets – beaten 4 – 0 in the last game at Brookburn Road – who currently sit in second place.

West moved into second place in the table with an impressive 4-1 win at home to high flying Runcorn Town. West manager Steve Settle was able to name an unchanged side to the one that had won 6-0 at league leaders Irlam on Friday night but was boosted by the returns of Mark Rogers and Ben Steer to the bench. Runcorn Town were entering the game on the back of a 1-0 win away to New Mills at the weekend which had lifted them above West in the table. Read More.
