PREVIEW | Curzon Ashton v West Women

Having already recorded a 100% start to the season with wins in the NWWRFL and FA Cup West Women turn their attention to the Manchester Women’s Challenge Cup this weekend.

It’s a meeting of last season’s two beaten semi-finalists as West travel to Failsworth to take on Curzon Ashton in the first round.  The Nash have enjoyed a 100% start to the season starting with an opening day win over Northwich Vixens thanks to goals from Amelia Flood and Paris Welsh.  They followed that up with a 3-1 win away to newly promoted Wythenshawe Amateurs through goals from Amy Smith, Mya Holmes and Paris Welsh to leave Curzon second in the table only on goal difference.

Last season Curzon Ashton quick started their Challenge Cup campaign with a 9-3 at home to Sale before thrashing Barrhill 7-2 in the quarter finals before exiting in the semi-finals to Manchester Stingers.

Last Season

West recorded their biggest ever win with a 10-1 win in the second round over Flixton having been omitted from the original first round draw due to an error. They finally beat Urmston Meadowside at the third time of asking running out 6-0 winners at Partington Sports Village before bowing out to FC United 3-0 in the semi-final.

Previous Meetings

West and Curzon met twice last season in the league with West managing to secure the three points on both occasions. The first meeting at Brookburn Road saw West race into an early three goal lead thanks to goals from Elizabeth Livesey, Leigh McFadyen and Emily Croasdale.  The return meeting was an epic encounter with Curzon 3-0 inside half an hour before West scored five unanswered goals through Hanifa Douglas (3), Lyndsey Turner and Emily Croasdale. A late Curzon goal frayed further nerves as West hung on to win 5-4.
