PRE-MATCH | Steve Settle: “Runcorn Town Will Be Our Toughest Challenge Yet”

West Manager Steve Settle said that Saturday’s visit of Runcorn Town would be the biggest test of their season to date but backed his side to raise their game.

“Judging by their start, Runcorn Town will be the toughest challenge of our season to date with seven wins from seven. In any league that’s good going in our league it’s particularly good going where if you’re off it by 5% you get beat. There are good teams in our league so to do that scoring loads of goals, they’re obviously tough. We will be looking to be on our game and it will be a good game hopefully.”

West themselves will be buoyed by last Saturday’s FA Vase win; “AFC Blackpool have had an upturn in fortunes since they were relegated from our league so we thought it was going to be a tough game. For 15 minutes it was and then we settled down and got the two goals. However we switched off and invited them back into the game, we had some words at half time and we moved the ball much quicker in the second half. We were very good and our quality told in the end.”

Asked why it meant to be backed by such vocal support; “Tremendous, obviously it’s brilliant when the lads are backed by our supporters like that. They made a racket throughout the game and came up with a few more songs. I know the lads really appreciate it as do the management team; it’s really pleasing to be able to give them something to cheer about.”

In addition, the club will be taking donations for Barakah Food Aid this weekend.  Setts also reiterated the importance of the clubs sense of community and also within his own squad; “It’s really important for us to be at the centre of our community. It’s really important for us as a club, and as a team that we can give back to people who are less fortunate as us. Last year’s Christmas Miracle was a massive success; it gets people behind it, the players are behind it and we want to make sure that we are providing a focal point for our community. If we can help people who are less well off than we are then that’s brilliant.”
