Matty Kay Departs for Mossley – West Didsbury & Chorlton AFC

Matty Kay Departs for Mossley

After 111 appearances and 46 goals over two spells the club wishes to express a fond farewell to former player-of-the-seaosn Matty Kay who has joined Evo-Stik League side Mossley.

Kay, 30, initially joined the club in 2014 on dual registration from Curzon Ashton playing for Andy Nelson’s side eight times and scoring four goals as West secured their status in the NWCFL Premier Division for the first time.  A stint with FC United followed where Matty would go onto lift the Evo-Stik Premier Division before he re-joined West in September 2015 as part of Steve Settle’s first West side. As part of a trio with Nic Evangelinos and Ash Woods the West number 10 helped himself to 14 goals from 36 appearances helping West to their highest place finish of 5th.

That season will be best remembered however for Matty’s stunning first time finish against Maine Road to hand West a first ever derby win and cement his status as a supporters favourite.

Matty would become synonymous with derby goals as he netted both home and away the following season as he helped himself to a share of the golden boot with 19 goals from 38 games. In addition, he netted a stunning strike against his former club FC United to level in the Manchester Premier Cup Semi Final.

The run-in included a memorable final week which saw West win four times to secure 6th place with he and Ash Woods netting seven times between them. This culminated on a thrilling final day at Bootle which saw Matty net a hat-trick as well as laying on a pair of assists.

Matty started the 2017/18 season in equally dramatic fashion off the field as he’d finished the 2016/17 season on it as he made it onto ITV’s Love Island via the medium of Twitter.

Despite missing a significant portion of the campaign through injury Matty still scored nine times in 29 appearances as he helped steer West away from Christmas time relegation worries and into tenth place. Matty was able to display his versatility as a player away to AFC Liverpool in a game which saw him start in goal, score and finish the night with a red card!
