Match Report

West succumbed to their heaviest defeat of the season as they shipped four second half goals away to Runcorn Town.

West’s injuries refused to abate as Steve Settle handed a full debut to 17 year old Carlos Mendes Gomes as he named 8 players in his squad aged 22 or younger.

West started brightly as Rob Black put Mendes Gomes through with a terrific pass, the teenager rounded the goalkeeper but could only strike the foot of the post from a narrow angle on 5 minutes.  Two minutes later he would make no mistake as Ash Woods played him through and the Spaniard slotted into the bottom corner to give West the lead.

The lead last just 6 minutes as West failed to clear a cross from the left, it fell to Joe Holt at the edge of the area who slotted it into the bottom right hand corner.  West retook the lead three minutes later following a trip inside the area allowing Matty Kay to send the keeper the wrong way.

On 20 minutes it was almost 3-1 as superb attacking play from Richmond Botchey down the left played in Ash Woods who fired inches wide of the post.  Runcorn Town made the most of the miss as they punted the ball long allowing Craig Cairns to round Andrew Robertson in the West goal and roll it into the net.  West almost responded with a third as a deflected effort looped over the Runcorn Town goalkeeper whose reactionary save tipped it onto the bar.  A minute later Anthony Potts headed just wide from a superb Matty Kay free kick.

Despite the physical threats posed to him Mendes Gomes continued to shine as he played in Ash Woods who in turn forced a superb save from the goalkeeper before Robertson was called into making a terrific save of his own at the near post.

In the second half West fell behind on 53 minutes when Robertson dropped a free kick allowing Simon Thelwall to tap into an empty net.  It was 4-2 five minutes later when Marcus James headed in an in-swinging corner on the line.

It was 5-2 on 77 minutes when Cairns was given time and space rounding Robertson to slot home. The sixth was added in the 96th minute as West conceded possession on the half way line and David Forbes finished into the bottom corner.
