MATCH REPORT | West Women 2-0 Liverpool Feds Reserves
West Didsbury & Chorlton Women made it eight wins in a row as they kick started the Argyle Sports Cup with a 2-0 win at home to Liverpool Feds Reserves.
West remained unchanged from their 4-0 win against Stockport County Blues the previous weekend as both teams were greeted at Brookburn Road by wet and windy conditions as well as a difficult surface. The difficult conditions made for a slow start and it wasn’t until the 15th minute when Captain Shauna Edmondson saw her free kick from the edge of the area palmed away by Feds goalkeeper Alex Caffrey.
West tried to force the issue as Sophie Bracegirdle forced an excellent save from the Feds goalkeeper from a narrow angle before Livesey fired another effort wide. As the weather worsened Feds looked to take the initiative and they finished the stronger of the two sides in an otherwise forgettable first half.
It was the visitors who created the first effort of the second half as lone striker Laura Bartup turned and rolled an effort to the near post from the edge of the area. West goalkeeper Claire Jefferson did well to get down and push the effort onto the outside of the post.
West took full advantage of the reprieve as they took the lead on the hour mark Feds goalkeeper Caffrey surrendered possession under pressure from Rachael Dunlop and then Bracegirdle allowing Livesey to roll the ball from the edge of the area and beyond the Feds defence into the bottom corner. West almost made it two five minutes later as Caffrey this time denied Livesey with a save with her legs. As conditions worsened and time ticked away it was a classic cup tie of attrition as Feds looked to find a way back into the game whilst West went in search of a second.
The game was eventually settled three minutes from time as Vicky Lomas was released through one-on-one with an inch perfect pass her effort was saved only for Dunlop to bury the rebound for her 18th goal of the season. Lomas almost added a third in stoppage time but West overcame a difficult Feds side to earn their place in the second round. West will now play Curzon Ashton at home in the Second Round with the tie scheduled to be played on Sunday 10th February, 2pm KO at Brookburn Road.
Elsewhere the Development Squad made a winning start to 2019 as they came from 3-0 down to beat AFC Oldham 5-4. Goals from Leanne Higham, Courtney Bamber, Mia Fenton, Lyndsey Turner plus an own goal saw the Devs climb up to second in the table.
