MATCH REPORT | West Women 10-1 Flixton

West Women reached the Quarter Finals of the Manchester Women’s Challenge Cup with an emphatic 10-1 win over GMWFL Side Flixton Juniors at Brookburn Road.

It was a much-changed West side who handed full debuts to Jess Hartley, Anna Carson-Parker, Debbie Price and Nat Callaghan. There was also a debut on the bench for Leanne Joyce.

West created a chance from the kick off as Shauna Edmondson curled over from the edge of the area following a lay off from Nat Callaghan from Jess Hartley’s cross.  Two minutes later Callaghan curled just over the bar as West asserted their early dominance before forcing the Flixton keeper Taska Bushell into a sharp stop from a hard effort.

The lead took just nine minutes to arrive as Ellie Caddick’s cross deep from the right found Nat Callaghan who brought the ball down before finding the net shooting between the goalkeepers legs.

Two minutes later West doubled their lead with when Price burst down the right before finding Leigh McFadyen with her low cross. McFadyen turned her marker with her first touch before rolling her effort into the bottom corner.

However, the onslaught failed to materialise and it was Flixton who pulled a goal back on 28 minutes as Danielle Honey burst through the defence and shot beyond Claire Jefferson in the West goal.

West responded on 34 minutes as a cross from the right by Price found Callaghan who turned her marker but rolled an effort just wide. As the half drew to a close Shauna Edmondson and Vicky Kerr both went close with efforts from the edge of the area but neither could test the Flixton goalkeeper.

West rang the half time changes as Paul Caddick made no less than five changes to his side. It had the desired effect as immediately as West threatened inside the opening seconds with Amayah Hanley rolling an effort just wide with her first touch.  Hanley made amends a moment later as she played in Elizbaeth Livesey who drilled home beyond the helpless Flixton goalkeeper to make it 3-1 on 46 minutes.

Two minutes later Livesey was involved in the action again as her hard effort cannoned off the inside of the post before Chaneece Reeves saw her rocket cannon off the underside of the crossbar. West weren’t to be denied though and Livesey added her second on 49 minutes as she turned home Caddick’s corner at the far post to make it 4-1.

On 52 minutes West went close again from a Caddick corner as Reeves saw her effort cleared off the line. However, it was a temporary reprieve as Reeves collected the loose ball, finding Hanley who beat her marker with a terrific first touch before firing into corner for 5-1.

The sixth arrived barely a minute later and it was arguably the pick of the bunch with Sophie Bracegirdle driving forward, her cross found Reeves who flicked it on into the path of Edmondson and she volleyed home from the edge of the penalty area.

Already in the history books for scoring West’s first ever competitive goal, Elizabeth Livesey registered West’s first ever hat-trick, completing the feat in just 13 minutes as she added West’s seventh when she volleyed in from Kerr’s cross.

Livesey then turned provider for the eighth as her low cross was turned home for Hanley to add her second of the game on 62 minutes. Six minutes later Hanley capped off an impressive debut as she collected her hat-trick, timed at 15 minutes, when she capitalised on a slip from the Flixton goalkeeper from her goal kick and rolled the ball into an empty net.

The 10th arrived in style on 75 minutes as Reeves cut inside from the left before firing a hard effort inside the post from the edge of the area; a great strike.

That was the end of the scoring as Manager Paul Caddick rotated his side to ensure everyone got minutes and with one eye on Stockport County. The last 10 minutes even saw Ellie Caddick make a cameo appearance up front.  West still continued to create a McFadyen was denied by a superb save from Bushell before McFadyen was played in by Caddick but saw her effort hit the foot of the post.

West now take their place in Friday’s Quarter Final draw of the Manchester Women’s Challenge Cup.
