MATCH REPORT | West 4-2 Squires Gate

West scored four for the fifth consecutive match as they eased past Squires Gate to celebrate non-league dog day.

Manager Steve Settle handed to starts to Daryl Weston at right back and a debut to Rory Carson in mid-field whilst he was boosted with the return of Captain Mark Rogers from suspension.

In front of the sky cameras West started quickly and were ahead after just three minutes when Ben Steer’s cross evaded stand-in goalkeeper Mike Hall and nestled into the side netting at the far post. Four minutes later Rydings skipped past a challenge in the penalty area before pulling it back to Carson who forced a good stop from the Squires Gate goalkeeper.  On 12 minutes Tom Bailey got on the end of a terrific cross at the far post but could only head into the ground.

It was 2-0 on 19 minutes when Matty Kay found Bailey who played in Steer who slotted into the corner for his second goal of the game. Carson came close again on 26 minutes whose effort was pushed round the post after Bailey pulled the ball back from the by-line.

West might have extended their lead further before half time when Ben Steer fired just wide on 37 minutes but would settle for a two-goal lead at the break.

West started the second half like they’d begun the first half as Matty Kay saw a header at the far post fly just wide before Mark Rogers saw a header from a corner pushed onto the crossbar on the goal line before Hall made another terrific save to deny Rydings.

The crowd of 353 (plus 29 non-league dogs) had to wait until 73 minutes for West to add their third as Kay powered home a header from Steer’s deep cross from the right.

Tom Bailey made it 4-0 on 82 minutes as Bailey headed home another Steer cross from close range.

A strong defensive performance was undone with 8 minutes remaining as Jack Williams struck a low effort from 25 yards out off the inside of the foot of the post; a terrific effort from the Squires Gate substitute. Squires Gate pulled a second one back in stoppage time as a defensive mix up saw West concede an own goal. However West claimed a deserved three points as they were applauded off by their supporters.
