Match report: West 1 – 4 Trafford FC

A beautiful sunny afternoon at Brookburn Road saw West welcome Trafford FC with former West hero Ash Woods in their starting eleven, They play in the league above West so it was always going to be a test for the home side.

A fantastic crowd of 221 saw West start brightly against their opponents but the first chance fell to Ash Woods who forced a great save from Aaron Ashley to deny him a goal on his return. West managed a couple of half chances from long range before Trafford took the lead from an own goal in the 31st minute . A ball into the box looked covered all the way before an unfortunate deflection took it past the West keeper.

Trafford doubled their lead three minutes later after a through ball from Woods played in his teammate who beat the keeper with a tidy finish.

West managed to regroup and half time arrived with no real chances of note for either side.

West made a number of changes at half time and, like the first half,started brightly and were rewarded four minutes into second period when an inviting ball into the box was cleverly headed over the advancing Trafford keeper by Nic Evangelinos.

West continued to press with Henderson unlucky on a couple of occasions. Around the hour mark Trafford’s quality started to show and they took control of the game. West had reason to be grateful that Woods appeared to have left his shooting boots in Urmston as he missed a number of chances that troubled the trees behind the West goal more than the man between the posts.

Their superiority led to a third goal on the 71st minute with a tremendous strike form distance that gave Ashley no chance .

The visitors maintained control of the remainder of the game and took advantage of West’s tired legs in the last minute when a cutback from the goal line was steered into the West net to complete the scoring.

Despite the result it was a good work out for the home side in terms of fitness and the fact they more than matched their higher league opponents for decent periods of the game will be of some comfort to both players and management
