Match Report | West Women 2-3 Warrington

A poor performance against lower league opposition ensured there was no joy of the cup for West.

Neither team found a rhythm to their game in the first 20 minutes, poor passing and stoppages in play contributing to a scrappy start. On 22 minutes Jami was fouled by the Warrington 8. A free-kick was awarded but the ref took no further action against the player. Jami was unable to continue, replaced by Bianca which led to a reshuffle for West.

Warrington took the lead on 26 minutes. Their forward was allowed to run from deep to latch on to a through ball and finish past Megan in the West goal. If could have been worse a few minutes later, Megan getting down quickly to intercept a cross and deny a tap in.

West were back on terms on 37 minutes. The Warrington keeper failed to deal with a decent VK free-kick, the ball eventually finding Rach Mason who showed a decent touch and finish into the empty net.

Half-time: 1-1

Warrington were immediately on the front foot after the break. Their 27 was allowed far too much space and her long range shot found the top corner.

The Warrington 8 had another poor challenge ignored by the referee approaching the hour mark and there was a flashpoint on 63 minutes when Vicky Kerr highlighted to the referee his inattentional blindness. She was booked for this and then swiftly booked a second time for a profane tongue.

West drew level again on 69 minutes. Leah Bowett-Robinson was fouled in the area. Shortz had her spot-kick saved, but Bianca reacted quickest to fire in the rebound.

West should have taken the lead moments later. Sophie Bracegirdle outpaced the Warrington right-back to reach a through ball, but her shot hit the side netting.

Warrington took the advantage almost immediately, catching West on the break to restore their lead. West plugged away to get back into the game but couldn’t find a clear opportunity on a very disappointing afternoon.
