West and Maine Road meet on Bank Holiday Monday for a South Manchester derby that could be a day of reckoning for the visitors.
A West win or draw will rubber-stamp Maine Road’s first relegation in 16 years – and even a win for Matt Barnes’ side may not be enough to keep their survival hopes alive if Abbey Hey or AFC Liverpool avoid defeat on Monday.
The home side prepared for the derby with Saturday’s comfortable 4-2 win over Ashton Athletic, while Maine Road were the odd team out and watched nervously as Abbey and the Reds were both edged out to ensure the relegation battle lasts at least another couple of days. A run of one win in their last eight games, including stoppage-time equalisers by Squires Gate and Padiham, means the situation is no longer in Road’s hands.
But for West, local pride will also be on the agenda, as will the fact they have failed to beat their neighbours at Brookburn Road in four attempts. West did beat Maine Road in October’s Manchester Premier Cup tie, but they will be desperate to avenge Boxing Day’s 2-1 defeat at Brantingham Road.
The teams will also be playing for the Rob Turley Memorial Trophy in remembrance of West’s former player, manager and chairman. Click here to find out more.
By the numbers
- Tom Bailey – winner of West’s golden shoe, supporters’ player and players’ player of the season awards – scored 27 times for Maine Road in 2012-13.
